USAA Motorcycle Insurance: What Members Should Know Before Quoting

Independent guide. Not affiliated with USAA.

USAA's motorcycle page offers coverage through the USAA Insurance Agency, which quotes through its alliance with Progressive, with the Foremost program for vintage and modified bikes. This guide explains how that works, which coverages and discounts USAA lists, and what to have ready. Our own form compares car insurance quotes only; for a motorcycle quote, use USAA's site or the insurer directly.

You'll continue to a partner site to see quotes.

The ZIP form on this page compares car insurance quotes. It does not provide motorcycle quotes.

How USAA handles motorcycle insurance

Unlike USAA car insurance, motorcycle coverage is not written by USAA itself. USAA's motorcycle insurance page sends members to the USAA Insurance Agency, which contracts with insurers that are not affiliated with USAA. USAA says it has worked closely with Progressive for over 30 years and that Progressive has agents dedicated to helping USAA members. The "Get a motorcycle quote" and "Retrieve a saved quote" buttons on that page lead to the Progressive quote.

For classic and custom bikes, USAA added the Foremost motorcycle program. USAA says it covers many types of motorcycles, including vintage motorcycles 20 years old or older and bikes with certain modifications, and that these plans aren't available in all states.

Who can get it

USAA membership is for active duty, National Guard and Reserve, veterans who served honorably, contracted ROTC cadets and midshipmen, officer and warrant officer candidates, service academy appointees, and spouses and children of USAA members; separated personnel need a discharge of Honorable or General Under Honorable Conditions (USAA membership). USAA says that as a USAA member or customer you automatically qualify for a discount on your motorcycle premium, and that discounts are not available in all states. Our USAA auto insurance guide covers eligibility in more detail.

Coverages USAA lists

USAA says standard coverage comes with all policies, including protection for injuries to others and damage to other people's vehicles and property, and lists these extras (USAA motorcycle insurance):

  • Comprehensive and collision, which add a set amount of accessories coverage for upgrades, customizations and gear (you can add more)
  • Genuine manufacturer parts guarantee
  • Enhanced injury protection, with weekly payments if a covered accident keeps you from working, plus a death benefit
  • Roadside assistance and trip interruption coverage
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
  • Total loss coverage for a bike less than a year old
  • Comprehensive and collision for mopeds and scooters

Exact limits and availability depend on the insurer and your state; the policy documents are what count.

Discounts USAA lists

  • Member discount through the Progressive alliance
  • Safety course discount
  • Multiple motorcycle and ATV discount
  • Responsible driver discount

What to have ready before quoting

  • Your vehicle identification number (VIN); USAA says the year, make and model also work
  • Family members who regularly ride your bike, so the quote covers them
  • Basic information about yourself and the coverage you want

USAA lists what affects the price: the age and experience of all riders, accidents and claims, the type of motorcycle and how you use it, and earned discounts such as a motorcycle endorsement on your license, no claims or violations, a passed safety course, and insuring several vehicles on one policy.

How to compare it fairly

Ask for the same liability limits, deductibles and extras from each insurer. Progressive, GEICO and Allstate all sell motorcycle insurance on their own websites, so you can check a direct quote next to the one you get through USAA. Our guides to Progressive quotes and GEICO quotes cover their car insurance tools. If you are also moving or deploying, see our car insurance checklist for military members.

Frequently asked questions

Does USAA offer motorcycle insurance?

Yes, through the USAA Insurance Agency. USAA's motorcycle page quotes through its alliance with Progressive and, for vintage and modified bikes, through the Foremost program (not in all states).

Who underwrites USAA motorcycle insurance?

The partner insurer, not USAA. USAA says the USAA Insurance Agency contracts with insurers that are not affiliated with USAA and that these third-party insurance products are not underwritten by USAA or its affiliates.

Does USAA motorcycle insurance cover ATVs?

USAA's motorcycle page says motorcycle insurance also covers an ATV or UTV, and it links a separate ATV quote.

Does a rider safety course lower the price?

USAA lists a safety course discount and counts passing a safety course among the earned discounts that affect cost. The amount depends on the insurer and state.

Can I get a motorcycle quote on this site?

No. Our ZIP form compares car insurance quotes only. For a motorcycle quote, use the "Get a motorcycle quote" button on USAA's motorcycle page or go to the insurer directly.
