Deductible check

What a Car Insurance Deductible Means

The deductible is what you pay on a covered claim before the policy pays. It is not the payment you make to keep the policy. Line it up before you compare quotes, so a smaller payment is not just a larger claim share.

You'll continue to a partner site to see quotes.

Collision and comprehensive usually show a deductible. Liability often does not. Read the line the number is attached to.

Your claim share Per coverage line Same on every quote
Your share What you pay on a covered claim before the policy pays.
Not the premium The payment to keep the policy is a separate number.
Match it Use the same deductible on every quote you compare.

On a car quote, look beside collision and beside comprehensive. Those can be two different amounts. Collision is your share of a covered crash claim for your car. Comprehensive is your share of a covered non-crash claim, such as theft or weather, when that line is on the policy.

Liability often has no deductible, because that line pays other people rather than repairing your car. Do not use a deductible to explain a liability-only quote. Compare the bodily injury and property damage limits instead. The coverage split is on liability vs full coverage.

If you raise the deductible, the payment to keep the policy often changes. That trade is the comparison: how much of a covered claim you can pay, set against the payment to keep the policy. This page does not pick an amount for you. Use the figure you could pay, then put that same figure on every quote.

A lower payment is not automatically a better quote. Check whether the deductible moved. If one company shows a higher deductible and a lower payment, you are looking at a different claim share, not a like-for-like price.

A short comparison

Use the amounts printed on your own quotes. Nothing in this table is a sample price.

Steps to compare with the same deductible

Pick the claim share first. Then shop.

  1. Decide the deductible you could pay on a covered claim.
  2. Find that amount on collision and, separately, on comprehensive.
  3. Set every quote to those same deductibles before you read the payment.
  4. If a quote will not show that deductible, leave it out of the comparison.

Keep the drivers and the ZIP code the same while you do this. A deductible match does not help if the household on the quote changed.
