How We Research Insurance Carriers

InsuranceNew.org publishes independent guides to U.S. auto, home and life insurance carriers. This page explains where our facts come from, how often we check them, and what to do if you find a mistake.

Who writes our guides

Our guides are written and reviewed by the InsuranceNew.org Editorial Team. We are not an insurance company, an insurance agency or a licensed agent, and we do not sell insurance or give personal advice. Insurers do not write, review or approve our guides.

Sources we use

  • The carrier's own website and documents. Eligibility rules, coverages, discounts, apps and quote tools are checked on the carrier's official site, its help pages or its published reports. When a carrier states a percentage or a limit, we repeat it as the carrier's claim and link to the page.
  • State insurance departments. Minimum coverage rules and consumer guidance vary by state, and your state's insurance department is the authority.
  • NAIC Consumer Insurance Search. Complaint information reported by state regulators, which you can look up for any licensed company.
  • AM Best. Financial strength ratings. We link to the rating source instead of restating scores, because ratings change.

If we cannot confirm a claim on an official source, we leave it out. We do not publish average prices or "cheapest" rankings, because your price depends on your ZIP Code, vehicle, driving record, coverage choices and the insurer's own rules.

What "Last reviewed" means

Each carrier guide shows a "Last reviewed" date. On that date we checked the facts on the page against the sources listed at the bottom of the guide. We aim to review each carrier guide at least every six months, and sooner when a carrier announces a major change such as a merger, a new program or leaving a market. Carrier websites can change at any time, so the carrier's policy documents and its quote are what count.

How we choose carriers

We cover large U.S. personal auto and home insurers that many readers ask about, plus carriers with a distinct audience, such as military families or drivers who need an SR-22. Covering a carrier is not an endorsement, and we do not rank carriers by how much anyone pays us.

Quote forms

When you enter your ZIP Code and press a quote button, you continue to a partner site. That site, not InsuranceNew.org, shows offers or connects you with insurers or licensed agents. We may be compensated when you use these forms; see How We Make Money. A carrier we write about may not be among the offers you see.

Corrections

If you spot an error or an outdated fact, please tell us through the Contact page and include the page address. We check every report against the carrier's official source and update the guide and its "Last reviewed" date when a correction is needed.
