Car Insurance Calculators by Company: What Each One Estimates
Search for a carrier's car insurance calculator and you will usually land on a tool that suggests coverage limits, not one that prices your policy. We checked the official tools at Progressive, GEICO, Allstate and The Hartford, plus what USAA and State Farm offer instead. Only a quote gives your actual price, so use a calculator to pick limits, then compare quotes with those same limits.
Quick answer
- Coverage estimators
- Progressive, GEICO, Allstate and The Hartford (AARP program) suggest coverages and limits.
- Price
- None of these tools gives a final price. The Hartford says its calculator won't estimate car insurance costs.
- Budget and comparison tools
- Progressive also has Name Your Price and AutoQuote Explorer, which work inside a quote.
- No public calculator found
- USAA and State Farm (State Farm points you to an agent).
Carrier calculators side by side
| Carrier and tool | What it estimates | Gives a price? |
|---|---|---|
| Progressive: car insurance calculator | Coverages and limits, from your state, your assets, whether the car is financed, its value and your risk tolerance | No. Progressive says it recommends a minimum set of coverages; get a quote for a cost estimate |
| Progressive: Name Your Price tool | Coverage options that fit the price you enter, inside a Progressive quote | Works within your quote; Progressive says it is not a price-matching tool |
| Progressive: AutoQuote Explorer | Rates from other companies next to your Progressive quote | Shown after your Progressive quote |
| GEICO: Coverage Calculator | Limits and deductibles to consider; GEICO calls it an educational tool | No |
| Allstate: car insurance calculator | Coverage options and limits, from your state, whether you own, lease or finance, and your vehicle's value | No final price; Allstate calls the results a starting point for a quote |
| The Hartford: car insurance calculator | Recommended coverage amounts from three questions and your state's requirements | No. The Hartford says it won't estimate costs |
| USAA | No public car insurance calculator found on usaa.com | The quote is the estimate |
| State Farm | No public calculator found; State Farm suggests letting an agent help you calculate your cost | Ask an agent or start a quote |
Progressive: three tools, three different answers
Progressive's car insurance calculator works as an estimator for coverage needs. It asks about your state, your home and other assets, whether you own or finance the car, what the car is worth, whether you owe more than it is worth, and how much you could pay out of pocket. Progressive says it recommends a minimum set of coverages for your situation and that a full cost estimate needs a quote.
Two other tools work inside a quote. With Name Your Price you enter the amount you would like to pay and Progressive shows coverage options that fit it; Progressive notes that its lowest price may not include all the protection you want. AutoQuote Explorer shows your Progressive quote first and then rates from other companies. How Progressive sets the price itself is explained on our sister site: how Progressive calculates your quote. Our Progressive quote guide covers Snapshot and discounts.
GEICO Coverage Calculator
GEICO's Coverage Calculator asks a short set of questions, such as the value of the most expensive vehicle you insure and how much time you spend driving, and returns suggested coverages. GEICO describes it as an educational tool to help you choose limits and deductibles, and suggests starting a quote or contacting an agent to see the price. See our GEICO quote guide for GEICO's coverage options and discounts.
Allstate car insurance calculator
Allstate's car insurance calculator uses your state, whether you own, lease or finance the vehicle, and whether the vehicle is worth more or less than a set amount. It returns coverage options and limits, such as liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist, personal injury protection, comprehensive and collision, which Allstate calls a starting point for a quote. More on Allstate's quote tools and Drivewise is in our Allstate quote guide.
The Hartford's AARP car insurance calculator
The Hartford, which runs the AARP Auto Insurance Program, offers a car insurance calculator with three questions. It recommends liability and uninsured/underinsured motorist amounts using your state's minimum requirements. The Hartford states plainly that the calculator won't estimate car insurance costs and that you need a quote to know the price.
USAA and State Farm: no public calculator
USAA. When we checked usaa.com, we found no public car insurance calculator; USAA's auto page offers a quote instead. USAA auto insurance is only for eligible military members, veterans and their families. Eligibility and USAA's telematics programs are covered in our USAA eligibility and quote guide.
State Farm. State Farm's car insurance coverage options page says your choice of coverage is just one factor in your price and suggests letting a State Farm agent help you calculate your cost. Our State Farm quote guide explains how to quote online or with an agent.
How to turn a calculator result into a fair comparison
- Write down the limits the tool suggests: bodily injury and property damage liability, uninsured motorist, and whether it recommends collision and comprehensive (see liability vs full coverage).
- Pick one deductible for collision and one for comprehensive, and use them on every quote (how deductibles work).
- Quote the same drivers and vehicles at each company.
- Compare prices only after the coverage matches. Our carrier comparison helps you line carriers up.
Frequently asked questions
Does Progressive have a car insurance calculator?
Yes. Progressive's car insurance calculator estimates the coverages and limits you may need from your state, assets, vehicle and risk tolerance. It does not give a price; Progressive says to get a quote for a full cost estimate.
Is there a USAA car insurance calculator?
We did not find a public car insurance calculator on usaa.com. A USAA auto quote is the way to see a USAA price, and USAA auto insurance is only for eligible members.
Can a calculator tell me what my car insurance will cost?
Not the carrier calculators we checked. Progressive, GEICO, Allstate and The Hartford describe their tools as coverage estimators, and The Hartford says its calculator won't estimate costs. Your price comes from a quote.
What is the difference between Progressive's calculator and Name Your Price?
The calculator suggests coverages before you quote. Name Your Price works inside a quote: you enter the amount you want to pay, and Progressive shows coverage options that fit it.
Does State Farm have a car insurance estimate tool?
We did not find a public calculator on statefarm.com. State Farm says your coverage choice is one factor in your price and suggests letting a State Farm agent help you calculate your cost.
Compare car insurance quotes by ZIP Code
Once your limits and deductibles are set, enter your ZIP Code to compare car insurance quotes. The form continues to a partner site, not to any carrier named on this page.
