Physical damage coverage
Collision vs Comprehensive Car Insurance
Collision and comprehensive both deal with your car, and they answer different losses. Collision is crash damage. Comprehensive is for non-crash losses the quote lists, such as theft, weather, fire, or an animal strike.
A quote can include one, both, or neither. Read the lines. Do not stop at the nickname full coverage.
Look at the cause of the loss, not the size of the repair. A crash with another car or with an object is the collision question. A stolen car, a storm, a fire, or an animal in the road is the comprehensive question, and only when that coverage is actually on the quote.
These two lines do not replace liability. Liability pays people you injure and property you damage. Collision and comprehensive pay for your car, after the deductible printed on that line. A quote can show one deductible for collision and a different deductible for comprehensive. Write both down.
Some quotes turn the two lines on together. Some let you keep one. If the page uses a single switch, open the detail anyway and confirm each line is listed. A missing line is not a discount. It is a loss the quote may not pay.
The wider split, including liability, is on liability vs full coverage. Quote entry for the car is car insurance quotes.
A short comparison
Use the cause of the loss to find the line. This is a reading aid, not a ranking and not a price.
| What happened | Line to look for | If that line is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Crash with a vehicle or object | Collision | The quote may not pay to repair your car |
| Theft, weather, fire, or an animal | Comprehensive | That loss may sit outside the quote |
| Injury to another person | Liability, not these two | Physical damage does not replace liability |
After you know which line applies, match the deductible on that line. The explanation is what a car insurance deductible means. Then rank companies with the same inputs on compare insurance companies by ZIP code.
If you are also comparing a house policy, use the home quote form and read what a home insurance quote includes. Collision and comprehensive are auto lines. They do not describe the dwelling.
Steps to compare collision and comprehensive
Check presence first, then the deductible, then the payment.
- Open the quote and find a collision line and a comprehensive line.
- Mark each one present or absent. Do not assume a nickname includes both.
- Copy the deductible shown on each line that is present.
- Compare payments only among quotes that list the same lines and the same deductibles.
If a quote hides those lines behind a single label, ask for the detail before you treat it as a match. The same drivers and the same ZIP code still have to be on every quote you set side by side.
