Coverage comparison
Liability vs Full Coverage Car Insurance
Liability pays other people when you cause a crash. Full coverage is a shopping phrase, not a separate policy. On most quotes it means those liability limits plus collision and comprehensive on your own car.
Use one ZIP code and the same drivers on every quote. Then read the lines, not the nickname.
Start with what the quote is promising to pay, not with the payment at the bottom. A liability quote is there to answer for harm you cause. Bodily injury covers people. Property damage covers their car or other property. Those two lines can be on a quote that never mentions your own car.
When a page says full coverage, treat that as a label you still have to open. The usual meaning is liability, plus collision for a crash that damages your car, plus comprehensive for non-crash losses the quote lists, such as theft or weather. If either of those car lines is missing, the quote is not the same offer as one that includes them.
State rules for minimum liability differ, and this page does not assign a number to your state. The quote itself should show the limit. Compare that printed limit across companies. Do not fill the gap with a guess.
A smaller payment is a real difference only after the lines match. If one quote drops collision to get there, you are comparing a different promise. Write down bodily injury, property damage, collision, comprehensive, and the deductible attached to the car lines before you look at the payment.
The auto starting point on this site is car insurance quotes. After the lines match, the company shortlist is compare insurance companies by ZIP code. The crash line and the non-crash line are split further on collision vs comprehensive.
A short comparison
Read this as a checklist for two quotes you already have. It is not a price list and it does not rank insurers.
| Line | Liability quote | Full-coverage quote |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury | Usually listed | Should still be listed |
| Property damage | Usually listed | Should still be listed |
| Collision | Often left off | Usually listed |
| Comprehensive | Often left off | Usually listed |
If you also own a home, keep that quote separate. The home path on this site is the home insurance quote form, and the checklist for what that quote should list is what a home insurance quote includes. Shopping both policies in one pass is covered on bundled auto and home insurance quotes.
How the deductible changes the car comparison is on what a car insurance deductible means. Match it before you decide the payment is the whole story.
Steps to compare the two quotes
Keep the order. Skipping to the payment is how a missing line gets treated as a saving.
- Enter the same ZIP code and the same drivers on every quote.
- Copy the bodily injury and property damage limits from each quote.
- Mark whether collision and comprehensive are present, and copy each deductible.
- Compare the payment only after those lines match.
You can do this with two companies or with five. The number of companies matters less than using the same inputs. If a quote will not show the limit or the deductible, set it aside until it does.
