New Car Replacement Coverage by Insurance Company
If a new car is totaled, a standard policy usually pays its depreciated value, which may not buy the same car again. New car replacement coverage closes that gap for newer cars, but only some insurers offer it, and each sets its own rules. Here is how it works and how major insurers handle it.
Quick answer
- What it is
- Coverage that pays toward a new car of the same kind after a total loss, instead of depreciated value.
- Who offers it
- Some insurers, such as Farmers and The Hartford; others offer gap or loan payoff instead.
- Eligibility
- Usually limited to newer cars within age and mileage rules.
- Not the same as gap
- Gap pays off a loan; new car replacement helps buy a new car.
How new car replacement works
A standard auto policy pays the car's actual cash value when it is totaled, which reflects depreciation. On a new car that value can fall quickly, so the check may not buy the same car again. New car replacement coverage changes that: if a newer car is totaled in a covered loss, it pays toward a new car of the same make and model (or a similar one) instead of the depreciated value, minus your deductible.
Eligibility is narrow. Insurers commonly limit it to cars within a set number of model years or miles, and some require that you are the first owner. Once the car ages out, the coverage usually ends.
New car replacement by insurer
| Insurer | What it offers | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Allstate | Describes new car replacement among its new-car coverages | Ask whether it is available on your policy and how "new" is defined |
| Farmers | Vehicle Replacement Plus (Farmers Flex policies) | Replaces a totaled newer car with a new or newer model, with age and mileage rules, and can pay off a loan gap |
| The Hartford | New car replacement | Replaces a totaled new car with the same make, model and equipment without deducting depreciation; terms vary by state |
| USAA | Car Replacement Assistance | Not a new-car swap: pays an extra amount above actual cash value after a total loss; requires comprehensive, not for leased cars |
| Progressive | Not listed; offers loan/lease payoff | Loan/lease payoff helps with what you owe, not with buying a new car |
| GEICO, State Farm | Not listed among standard auto coverages | Ask when you quote; otherwise look at gap or loan/lease payoff |
For Esurance and The General, ask when you quote. Availability, age and mileage rules vary by state and change over time.
New car replacement vs gap vs loan/lease payoff
- New car replacement: aims to put you back in a new car of the same kind. It does not by itself pay off a loan.
- Gap insurance: pays the difference between the actual cash value and what you still owe on a loan or lease. It does not buy a new car.
- Loan/lease payoff: similar to gap, often with a cap tied to the car's value.
- Combined products: some, like Farmers Vehicle Replacement Plus, include both a newer car and a loan gap payoff.
Who should consider it
- You just bought a new or nearly new car and could not cover the drop in value after a total loss.
- You put little money down or have a long loan, so you may owe more than the car is worth (pair with gap if needed).
- It makes less sense once the car passes the insurer's age or mileage cutoff, or if you could comfortably buy a used replacement.
How a claim usually works
- The insurer decides whether the car is a total loss under its rules.
- If the car still qualifies, the replacement benefit applies instead of the depreciated value, minus your deductible.
- If the same model is not available, the policy wording decides what happens: a similar model, a set amount, or another option.

Frequently asked questions
These questions cover leased cars, gap, and adding coverage later.
Does new car replacement cover leased cars?
Often not. USAA, for example, excludes leased cars from its Car Replacement Assistance. Ask each insurer, and look at gap or loan/lease payoff for a lease.
Do I still need gap if I have new car replacement?
Possibly. New car replacement aims to get you a new car, while gap pays what you owe on the loan. If you owe a lot, ask whether the product includes a loan payoff.
Can I add new car replacement later?
Usually only while the car still meets the insurer's age and mileage rules, and many companies expect you to add it soon after purchase.
