Medical Payments vs Bodily Injury Liability

Bodily injury liability pays other people you injure. Medical payments, when a quote lists it, pays medical bills for people in your car without first deciding who caused the crash. They are different lines.

You'll continue to a partner site to see quotes.

Some quotes include medical payments. Some do not. Read the line instead of assuming the liability limit covers it.

Other people People in your car Printed limit
Bodily injury Pays people you injure, up to the limit on that line.
Medical payments Medical bills, often without a fault fight, when the line is listed.
Not the same A liability-only quote can omit medical payments.

Bodily injury liability is part of the liability split. It answers for injuries you cause to other people. Property damage, next to it, answers for their car or other property. Neither of those sentences tells you whether medical bills for a passenger in your own car are covered. That is the medical-payments question, and only if the quote lists the line.

Medical payments is sometimes called med pay. It is not health insurance, and it is not a promise that every bill is paid. The quote should show a limit. Compare that printed limit. This page does not fill in a number for your state, because the quote is the place that number belongs.

Uninsured motorist coverage is a third idea. It responds when the other driver has no insurance, or not enough. It is not medical payments, and it is not bodily injury liability. If you are sorting those names, read uninsured motorist coverage on a car quote next to this page.

The broader liability label, including what people call full coverage, is on liability vs full coverage. A smaller payment that dropped medical payments is not the same quote. Match the line before you compare companies on compare insurance companies by ZIP code.

Keep the drivers the same. Who must be listed is covered on other drivers on a car insurance quote. The auto hub is car insurance quotes.

Steps to compare the injury lines

Find each line, copy the limit, then look at the payment.

  1. Use the same ZIP code and the same drivers on every quote.
  2. Copy the bodily injury limit and the property damage limit.
  3. Mark medical payments as listed or absent, and copy its limit if it is listed.
  4. Compare payments only after those injury lines match.

If the quote hides medical payments inside a package name, open the package. The name is not the limit.
