Uninsured Motorist Coverage on a Car Quote
Uninsured motorist coverage is the line that responds when the other driver has no insurance, or not enough insurance, to pay for harm they cause. It is not liability, and it is not collision.
Look for the line on the quote. A missing line is not the same offer as a quote that lists it.
Liability pays people you injure. Uninsured motorist coverage is the other direction: it is there when someone else causes the crash and their liability insurance is missing or too thin. Read the quote for a bodily injury uninsured-motorist line, and see whether a property-damage uninsured-motorist line is listed separately. States treat those two differently, so the quote should show what is included instead of asking you to guess.
Underinsured motorist coverage, when the quote names it, is the companion line. The other driver has insurance, but the limit does not cover the harm. Some quotes bundle the two names. Some list them apart. Open the detail either way and copy what is actually printed.
Do not treat this line as a substitute for collision or comprehensive. Those pay for your car under your own policy, after the deductible on that line. Uninsured motorist coverage is about the other driver's missing protection. The split between crash damage and non-crash losses is on collision vs comprehensive.
A smaller payment can come from leaving this line off. Match it before you compare companies. Also match liability, because the two lines answer different people. The liability side of a quote is explained on liability vs full coverage.
Use the same ZIP code and the same drivers on every quote. Who counts as a driver is its own check, on other drivers on a car insurance quote. Quote entry for the car is car insurance quotes.
A short comparison
Use this to tell the lines apart on a quote you already have. It is not a price and it does not rank insurers.
| Line | Who it responds for | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Liability | People you injure and property you damage | The other driver's missing insurance |
| Uninsured motorist | Harm caused by a driver with no applicable insurance | A repair deductible for your car |
| Underinsured motorist | Harm that exceeds the other driver's limit, when listed | A guarantee of any particular limit |
| Collision | Crash damage to your car under your policy | The other driver's liability |
After the line is present on each quote, compare the limit that is printed. This page does not assign a statewide number. If one quote will not show the limit, leave it out until it does. Then rank companies on compare insurance companies by ZIP code.
If you are also comparing a house policy, start that quote at the home quote form. Uninsured motorist coverage is an auto line. It does not describe the dwelling.
Steps to compare this line
Presence first, then the printed limit, then the payment.
- Enter the same ZIP code and the same drivers on every quote.
- Find uninsured motorist bodily injury, and note whether property damage is a separate line.
- Note whether underinsured motorist coverage is named on its own.
- Compare the payment only after those lines and their printed limits match.
If the quote uses one nickname for several lines, open it before you treat the quotes as equal. A nickname is not the limit.
